Abstract

This IDC Market Presentation examines the current state of the global food crisis and highlights some examples of how 5G-enabled use cases work toward mitigating the prevalence of hunger in the world.

The global population has grown faster than even the most dystopian science fiction movies from 50 years ago ever predicted. That growth, along with climate change and overfarming, has contributed to an increasing number of people in the world without access to sufficient food for daily nutritional needs. Incorporating new technology into age-old farming methods is critical to reducing malnutrition that is resulting from accelerated population growth and inherent inefficiencies in many of the manual agricultural processes. 5G network vendors are enabling more efficient, zero-touch smart agriculture solutions that can significantly boost food production to aid in alleviating food insecurity and undernourishment but also do so in a more sustainable, climate-friendly manner.
