Abstract

This IDC study provides an overview of and definitions for IDC's Quantum Computing Trends and Strategies syndicated research. It captures the definitions that IDC uses to identify and segment quantum computing infrastructure deployments, consumption models, and services. Further, this taxonomy delineates between pure (quantum only) and hybrid (quantum-classical) computing systems, platforms and technologies, and associated services. Because the quantum computing market is driven by investments in quantum computing, this study includes a segmentation that details entities that fund quantum computing initiatives and entities that accept such investments for developing products and services.

"In 2000, DiVincenzo published what would become the defining criteria that many quantum hardware vendors have adopted in their quest to realize a gate-based quantum computing system. Yet, eight years later, DiVincenzo acknowledged that due to the uncertainties regarding quantum development, it was unknown 'whether all of the requirements can be fulfilled' or whether there would need to be unforeseen trade-offs," said Heather West, senior research manager, IDC's Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies Group. "Despite this acknowledgment, the accessibility, utility, and value of quantum annealing systems is often overlooked or disregarded as a true quantum computing system. However, quantum annealers and other quantum computing systems that exploit the quantum mechanics of qubits to execute quantum computations should regarded as quantum computing systems."
