Abstract

This IDC MarketScape evaluates U.S. EHR solution vendors in terms of strategies and capabilities that support next-generation EHRs, which IDC describes as having "surpassed traditional systems of record by developing into comprehensive and integrated platforms of engagement and intelligence." These platforms not only enable more streamlined clinical documentation but also support value-added activities (e.g., digital patient engagement, integrated care pathways, and value-based reimbursement), moving away from a workflow centered on data entry to that of an outcomes-based, consumer-centric focus. These EHRs more effectively address challenges that have long-hindered the user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and human-machine interactions in the EHR by fusing modern system design with cutting-edge technology. Interoperable and intelligent, these EHRs can significantly improve clinical productivity, care delivery, and experiences for all.

"Next-generation EHRs are transforming U.S. healthcare," says Mutaz Shegewi, research director, IDC Health Insights. "By putting data and intelligence into action in new and improved ways, these AI-enhanced, cloud-based EHRs are not just digitizing patient records; they are enabling clinicians with more holistic and longitudinal patient views and their organizations with more streamlined operations. Despite any hurdles, such as legacy infrastructure and cybersecurity concerns across the industry, most of these EHRs have evolved into sophisticated platforms that are pivotal in driving the much-needed efficiency, diagnostic innovation, and digital patient engagement that healthcare needs. They are steering the industry away from past limitations and longstanding frustration with the technology toward a future where better outcomes, patient centricity, and elevated experiences are paramount. EHRs are the backbone for a new era in healthcare, where technological innovation and a human touch can converge to create systems that are not only smarter and more efficient but also responsive to the needs of patients and clinicians alike."
