Abstract
This IDC Perspective discusses the future of digital infrastructure as defined by a global team of IDC analysts. The emerging digital infrastructure ecosystem is built on increasingly cloud-centric technologies, more ubiquitous deployment options, and more automated IT operations. Its focus is to ensure ever faster delivery of innovative infrastructure hardware, software, resource abstraction, and process technologies to support the development and continual refinement of resilient digital services and digital experiences. The transition to cloud-centric digital infrastructure depends upon commitment to a digital strategy focused on resource optimization, consistent resilience, and continual enhancement. In subsequent IDC market research documents, such as Ubiquitous Deployment: A Holistic Approach Makes Infrastructure More Adaptive and Flexible (IDC #US46826420, September 2020), we will delve into each element of our future of digital infrastructure framework.
"The digital services being developed to deliver modern and increasingly automated customer/work experiences and intelligent business operational systems depend upon having early access to innovative but resilient and trusted technology at the physical and logical levels, anywhere," said Richard L. Villars, group VP, Worldwide Research, and global lead for Future of Digital Infrastructure research at IDC. "By 2023, an emerging digital infrastructure ecosystem will be the underlying platform for all IT and business automation initiatives anywhere and everywhere."
